The Assassins

The Games series is the Assassins' best-known output, and it's the one that earns them their place in the archive. The series ran from disk 1 to disk 261, with each volume typically packing two to six games onto a single floppy. The format was straightforward and practical: no frills, no fuss, just a tidy selection of PD and shareware games.

The Assassins weren't a traditional PD library in the sense of running their own mail order operation - they were content producers whose work was picked up and redistributed widely. The same disk might appear in the catalogues of half a dozen different libraries simultaneously, often each with their own reference number.

The catalogue itself was carefully maintained. The Assassins checked all disks on as many machines as possible with varying configurations, and included compatibility notes for A1200 users - marking games that needed fixes, and flagging those that simply wouldn't run on the newer hardware. That kind of attention to quality and compatibility wasn't universal in the PD world, and it helped build trust in the series.

Beyond the Games disks, the Assassins also produced a range of utility-focused compilations - series titles including Handy Tools, Disk Helper, Office Helper, Audio Magic, and Icons Utils, among others. The Games series, however, is what defined them.
